Aurora Township residents who currently pay a fee for their Aurora Public Library cards will be paying less this year and next, thanks to higher census numbers and lower property tax revenues.
The Aurora Public Library Board on Wednesday, May 11, voted to continue to participate in the non-resident services program, while reducing the fee to $165 per year per family. Last year, the fee was $190.
“New census figures and reduced local property tax revenues have affected the state-approved formula that determines the minimum the library must charge,” said Library Director Eva Luckinbill. The new, lower fee takes effect July 1 and is good through June 30, 2012.
Those who do not pay taxes to any library service area must pay a fee to obtain a library card. Persons who have library cards that are valid in other cities are welcome to register their cards with the Aurora Public Library and check out materials through a program called “reciprocal borrowing.”
In other business, the board approved the selection of Schoppe Design Associates of Oswego for landscape architecture services for the new Aurora Public Library building, which will be located at River and Benton streets in downtown Aurora.
Cordogan Clark & Associates of Aurora and Chicago has been chosen as the architectural firm for the new building, R.C. Wegman Construction Co. of Aurora will act as construction manager, and Engineering Enterprises, Inc. of Sugar Grove will provide engineering services. The library board hopes the groundbreaking for the new building can take place in early 2012.
The board also approved a contract with Jerry Linzy from Jerold Panas, Linzy & Partners, a firm specializing in financial resource development, to write a Case for Support for the building project. The firm is based in Chicago.
A Citizen’s Advisory Group to give feedback to the library board regarding the plans for the new building is being formed, Luckinbill said. Aurora residents who would like to apply to become a member of the group can call the Aurora Public Library Business Office at 630-264-4100.
