Unattended Child Policy
The Aurora Public Library welcomes the use of its facilities and services by children, but cannot accept responsibility for their supervision. Thus, the following policy on Unattended Children at the Aurora Public Library was established. A child left unattended in violation of this policy may be deemed to be at risk. In such situations, Library staff may contact the police to ensure the safety of the child if the parent or caregiver cannot be located.
- Children under the age of six must always be within sight of the adult responsible for their safety.
- Children age 8 and under must be directly supervised by a parent or responsible caregiver (age 16 or over) at all times while in the Library. Parents or caregivers must remain in the same area of the Library unless the child is attending a Library program, in which case they must remain in the Library.
- Children 9 and older may be left unattended provided they are mature enough to follow library rules and the Library Code of Conduct. Children are subject to the same rules of behavior as other library users and the same consequences apply, including being asked to leave the Library if they are disruptive.
- Children under the age of 16 unattended at closing may be deemed at risk. If a parent or caregiver cannot be contacted or located within 15 minutes of the Library’s closing time, the Aurora Police Department will be contacted to take custody of the child.
We appreciate your cooperation in observing this policy.
