Aurora library teams up with Polaris to make catalog searches, research, easier

AURORA – On April 11, Aurora Public Library will go live with Polaris, its new library automation system. In order to train staff on the new system, all library locations will be closed on April 5 for a system-wide training day.

Polaris will allow patrons to access the library’s catalog from any Internet connection 24 hours a day, seven days a week, by going to the library’s website at aurorapubliclibrary.org. Catalog information includes library materials such as books, CDs and DVDs.

With a password, patrons will be able to access personal accounts and view a list of books they have checked out, materials on hold, and fines owed. They also will be able to sign up for emails that will alert them when the library has a new book by a favorite author.

“We are very pleased to offer this convenient new service to our patrons,” said Executive Director Eva Luckinbill. “People are very busy today, and our goal is to make using library services as easy as possible.”

Polaris has other state-of-the-art features. Students doing research or homework can have the system automatically format a bibliography of selected items in the format of their choice. Patrons will be able to access periodical and reference databases that the library subscribes to as well as search other libraries’ databases. And library patrons will be able to have their checkout receipts emailed to them instead of receiving a paper copy.

In the coming months, the library will be launching other new features of the Polaris system. The user experience will be enhanced with more personalized pages and collaboration with schools, educational institutions and civic organizations, and service clubs will be expanded and highlighted.

The Polaris interface is Web-based. As a result, patrons will be comfortable using the new library system since it functions just like their computer at home or in their offices.

“Polaris represents advanced technology that our community expects to see in their library,” Luckinbill said. “This new system will allow us to provide services that our patrons want and enhance the productivity of our staff so that library resources are available for public use faster.”

As the new system goes online, some services will be limited. From April 6 to 13, patrons will not be able to place new hold requests. Patron accounts and the catalog will not be accessible, online or in library locations, on April 10.
