Library’s Outreach Services Department to move from Church Road to Santori location

AURORA, IL – Aurora Public Library’s Outreach Services Department, which operates the Express Center, Bookmobile and homebound delivery service, will move into the Richard and Gina Santori Public Library of Aurora in early 2017.

The Express Center will be closed permanently in late 2016 as part of cost-cutting measures announced this summer.

The Outreach Services collection, including books, DVDs, audiobooks and periodicals, will be moved from rented space at 1100 Church Road to the third floor of the Santori Library at 101 S. River St. Outreach Services staff also will move from Church Road to the 5,000-square-foot space that will be finished in the months to come.

The third floor “shell space,” as it has come to be known, was left unfinished for future expansion when the Santori Library was under construction in 2014-2015.

The Aurora Public Library Board of Directors voted in their Aug. 31 meeting to hire R.C. Wegman as the construction manager for the build-out of the space. The work is expected to cost approximately $160,000. Wegman also was the construction manager for the Santori Library, which opened in June, 2015.

Once under way, the build-out is expected to take two months. Outreach Services Manager Kathleen Butzen said interruptions in outreach services should be minimal and only will happen when the employees and the collection move into the new space.

“I expect we may have to modify our schedules for several days,” Butzen said. “But the impact on customers will be small as we intend to make the move as seamless as possible.”

The Bookmobile will continue to be stored in the garage at the old Main Library building at 1 E. Benton St. thanks to an agreement with the new owner of the building, Support Companies LLC.

The Bookmobile visits schools on a three-week rotation throughout the school year. The Bookmobile also delivers materials requested from the collections at all other Aurora Public Library locations. Customers may return their materials from any of the Aurora Public Library’s stationary locations to the Bookmobile.

In addition, the Bookmobile has community stops throughout the city to serve customers of all ages. The Bookmobile carries an extensive collection of large print books for adults, high interest fiction and nonfiction for teens and a wide variety of popular materials for children. The Bookmobile and its staff also is available to participate in parades, citywide festivals, school celebrations and events, block parties and other communities events.

Children and seniors are served by the Outreach Services Department through the Van Delivery Service. Each week, van service is provided to senior citizens and preschool students at the following locations:

A collection of large print books, magazines and audio books are circulated among the seniors. The van service operates on Tuesday and Thursday mornings.

Homebound Service is available to patrons who reside within the city limits of Aurora and are confined by an illness, injury or physical handicap for at least 6 weeks. The Outreach Services Department has bilingual staff that serves both English and Spanish speaking patrons.

Outreach services also place library materials at retirement or nursing home facilities for the use of residents. Large-print books, audio books and videos are stocked at Alden of Waterford, Elmwood Terrace, McAuley Convent, McAuley Manor, Plum Landing and Sunnymere.
