Makerspace Guidelines

The Makerspace is located on the first floor of the Santori Library near the west entrance. The purpose of the Makerspace is to provide customers with state-of-the-art technologies to support educational, professional and personal goals and endeavors.

Everyone is welcome to use the Makerspace; however, APL customers may reserve use of specific tools/technology in advance. The Makerspace is available on a first-come, first-served basis unless previously reserved. APL customers may reserve equipment (3D printer, laser cutter, etc.) up to one week in advance for a maximum of two hours per day per customer. Reservations can be made in person or by phone, email to the Library Digital Services desk at 630-264-4100 X4203; by sending an email to: Digital Services Staff.


Library customers ages 12 and older may use the Makerspace without adult supervision. Library customers ages 11 and younger must have a parent/guardian with them at all times. The Makerspace is available for two hours at a time. However, customers may stay longer if there is no demand for the equipment at the end of their time slot.

To use the Makerspace, a customer must register at the Reference/Digital Services Desk and must leave one of the following forms of identification:

Behavior in the Makerspace is to be consistent with the library’s Code of Conduct policy. Internet and equipment usage must be consistent with the Library Internet Access and Public Computer Use policies.

*exceptions to hours will be made during summer and for scheduled tours, workshops and special events by prior arrangement only.

The Makerspace will be locked when not in use.

A variety of equipment available in the Makerspace can be used at a charge. Please click here to see the brochure highlighting the makerspace technology.

All equipment available in the Makerspace must stay within the library. It is the responsibility of the customer to delete and/or remove any files (digital or print) from the library equipment in the Makerspace. The library is not responsible for equipment or files (digital or print) left behind by customers.

Library staff will provide very limited assistance in using the equipment and software or transporting of supplies, equipment, or furniture to and from the Makerspace.

The Makerspace user accepts financial responsibility for any and all damage caused to the building and/or equipment beyond normal wear. The cardholder will be responsible for any charge incurred by his or her group.

Customers may reserve the Makerspace for up to two hours in advance by contacting the Digital Services Desk (in person or by calling 630-264-4100, ext. 4203). Reservations will be held for 10 minutes.

A maximum of six to eight people are allowed in the Makerspace at any given time.

Customers will be assigned to a specific computer based on their needs.

Customers must save their work on an external memory source — external hard drive, CD, DVD, or flash drive (CDs, DVDs, and flash drives are sold at the Courtesy Services Desk).
