Media Lab Guidelines

The Digital Media Lab, located on the second floor off the Teen Program Room, is available for use by everyone, but APL cardholders may reserve it in advance. The purpose of the lab is to provide customers with various digital media technologies that support educational, professional and personal goals and endeavors.

Library customers age 12 and older may use the lab without adult supervision. Library customers age 11 and younger must have a parent/guardian with them in the lab at all times. The lab is available for one (3) hours per day. Customers may stay longer if there is no demand for the lab at the end of their time slot.

The Digital Media Lab may be reserved in advance. Otherwise, it is available on a first-come, first-served basis. APL cardholders may reserve the media lab up to 48 hours in advance for a maximum 3 hours per day. Reservations can be made in person or by phone or text message to the Reference desk at 630-264-4101; by sending an email to digitalservices@aurorapubliclibrary.org. Reservations will be held for 10 minutes.

No food or drinks are allowed in the media lab.

Behavior in the lab is to be consistent with the library’s Code of Conduct policy. Internet and equipment usage must be consistent with the Internet Access and Public Computer Usage policy.

Before using the digital media lab, a customer must show one of the following forms of identification with the staff member at the Reference/Digital Services desk:

Equipment: A variety of equipment is available in the Digital Media Lab to use, free of charge:

All equipment in the Digital Media Lab must stay within the library. It is the responsibility of the customer to delete and/or remove any files (digital or print) from the equipment in the lab. The library is not responsible for equipment or files (digital or print) left behind by customers.

Library staff will provide very limited assistance in equipment and software use or transporting of supplies, equipment or furniture to and from the lab.

The Media Lab user accepts financial responsibility for any and all damage caused to the building and/or equipment beyond normal wear. The cardholder will be responsible for any charge incurred by his or her group.

The Media Lab will be open during library open hours and will be closed 30 minutes prior to library closing.

The lab will be locked when not in use.

A maximum of four people are allowed in the lab at any given time.

A customer will be assigned to a specific computer based on his or her needs.

Only users who are working on digital media projects (video, music, web design, photo editing, scanning) will be allowed access to the room.

Customers must save their work on an external memory source — external hard drive, CD, DVD, or flash drive — all for sale at the Courtesy Services Desk.
