Interlibrary Loan (ILL)

Looking for a book, article, movie, or music? Don’t see it in the catalog? Try Interlibrary Loan (ILL)! Interlibrary Loan is a service provided by Aurora Public Library. If you have a valid Aurora Public Library card, in good standing, you can request items from lending libraries across the country.

Please follow these steps to request an Interlibrary Loan:

FIRST log in to your library account via PAC with the your library card and pin, and then do your search for the ILL item, you will also have to select “worldcat” to the all the results prior to placing your ILL request. If you need help with ILL request, please call the reference desk at 630-264-3420.

You may requests up to five (5) items per library card at a time.

  1. Log in to your Library account with your library card and PIN number.
  2. Click on “Search” followed by “Keyword.”
  3. Click on “select databases,” and check “WorldCat” followed by “set databases”  and “close.”  (You may have to authenticate again with your library card and PIN to use databases such as WorldCat.)
  4. Initiate the search  by Keyword, Title, Exact, or Phrase, etc… find the title that you wish to ILL, click on “place request.”
  5. Click on “submit request,” followed by “continue,” and “log out.”

What is ILL?

Interlibrary Loan (ILL) is how the Aurora Public Library (APL) requests material or lends material to another library. The main purpose of this service is to provide materials to our customers that are not available at any of the Aurora Public Library locations.

What do I need to use ILL?

You’ll need an Aurora Public Library card and a PIN to use ILL. You can make your request in person at any APL facility including the Bookmobile, by calling 630-264-4121, or online.

What if I forgot my PIN?

If you forget your PIN, please contact the Circulation Desk at (630) 264-4100, during regular library hours. We can reset your PIN.

How many ILLs can I request?

You can have five (5) interlibrary loans in process at any given time. This includes items requested, in process, and checked out. For example, if you have four (4) items checked out, or previously requested but not received, you will only be able to request one (1) additional item through Interlibrary Loan.

What materials can I request through ILL?

You can request books, DVDs, CDs, magazines, articles, photocopies of microfilm material, and sheet music.

What materials can I not request through ILL?

Video games, Blue-Rays, e-books, whole microfilm reels, and items published within the last six (6) months may not be requested.

How long does it take to get the item from ILL?

It typically takes 2-8 weeks to receive ILL items and prepare them for checkout. Out of state items can take longer. We will notify you if we can’t fill your request.

How can I see the status of my ILL request?

You can see the status of your request by logging in to your library account with your library card and PIN.

How long is the checkout period of ILL materials?

Three weeks for all materials, except DVDs, which check out for one week.

Overdue Interlibrary Loan (ILL) material fines are the same as those for Aurora Public Library items. The fine on all materials is 25 cents per day/per item except for DVDs, for which the fine is 50 cents per day/per item. The maximum fine for an item is $5.00.

You are responsible for paying the replacement cost assessed by the lending library. Please contact us if you’ve lost or damaged your ILL.
