Aurora Public Library Bookmobile to be featured at Bookmobile Roundup

AURORA — The Aurora Public Library’s Bookmobile will be featured in the Midwest Bookmobile & Outreach Network (MBON) Bookmobile Roundup at Fountaindale Public Library on June 7.

MBON represents multiple libraries in the Chicago metropolitan area and southern Wisconsin. The focus for Outreach Departments is to reach residents who are physically unable to use the library buildings in their communities.

A dozen bookmobiles will be on display to the public during a 1 to 3 p.m. open house at Bolingbrook’s Fountaindale Public Library located at 300 W. Briarcliff Road.

Libraries participating in the event include Aurora, Fountaindale-Bolingbrook, Markham, Lynwood-Glenwood, Homer Glen, Kenosha, Arlington Heights, Skokie, Warren-Newport Gurnee, Cook Memorial-Libertyville and White Oak Library District (Romeoville).

The members of MBON meet quarterly to work together to improve outreach services to their patrons.

“This is a wonderful opportunity for the members of MBON to share ideas and plans to grow and enhance outreach services to their communities,” said Marianne Thompson, Outreach Manager for the Fountaindale Public Library.

Kathleen Butzen, Outreach Services Manager for Aurora Public Library, said Aurora has both a 41-foot traditional bookmobile (which visits public schools during the school year and more than 25 community stops in the summer), and a Mini-Bookmobile (Mini-B) that serves senior living facilities, preschools and homebound patrons.

In 2012, Aurora’s Bookmobile and Mini-B:

In 2013, Aurora’s Bookmobile celebrated 60 years of service with the release of a book, “Bookmobile Memories.”

“Although bookmobiles have been around for a long time, the Aurora Public Library’s Bookmobile has kept up with changes in technology and trends,” Butzen said. “Our Bookmobile does not just carry books for kids. We also circulate adult and young adult materials, including Nooks, DVDs, audiobooks, magazines, graphic novels and even comic books.”

The Bookmobile is equipped with state-of-the-art laptops that connect wirelessly to the Main Library’s catalog and circulation system.

“To many people, the Bookmobile is an essential service. To others, just plain, old-fashioned fun,” Butzen added. “It always brings a smile to the face of our patrons, because who doesn’t love a bookmobile?”
