I. How Can the Library Help Me Here?

Compiling a list of former owners of your property is called establishing a “chain of title.” The library has some tools to help you determine who those past owners were.

City Directories:

Our collection of City Directories starts in 1858, and contains many (but not all) volumes published since then. These books give the names of people living in the house, and sometimes the occupations of the residents.

Starting in 1895, entries were cross indexed by street AND owner names.

Starting in 1929, the city of Aurora began a new street numbering system, and the library has materials to track the former addresses.
