Notary Services
Do you need a notary? A Notary Public appointed by the State of Illinois is available to help you by notarizing documents at every APLD location. Notary Public services are available at no charge and by appointment only. Same-day and walk-in appointments are not available at this time. This service is available in English at all locations and in Spanish at Santori and West Branch. You will have the opportunity to select your desired location and language on the appointments page. Call 630-264-4117 to schedule an appointment or schedule online.
Prepare for Your Appointment

- Refrain from signing until you are present for your appointment. Some documents require you to sign in the presence of the notary.
- Bring a valid, government-issued photo ID
- Fill in the rest of the fields in your document prior to arrival
- Please bring the entire document with you
- If there is more than one signer to the document, all signers must be at the same appointment and present ID.
- If a witness is required, you must bring a witness with you. Library staff or other library customers may not act as a witness. Witnesses must also present ID.
What is a Notarial Certificate and Why Does it Matter?
Every document notarized in the State of Illinois requires an accompanying notarial certificate. This certificate tells the notary what kind of notarization the document requires. Not all documents that require notarization contain the notarial certificate. That’s okay! We have certificates available for you to choose exactly what you need for your document. Remember, our notaries are not attorneys, and cannot select which certificate you need for your document. If you are unsure of which certificate you need, please consult an attorney or the appropriate authority for assistance before you make a notary appointment. The following is an example of one type of notarial certificate:
