This performance explores the world of Anne Frank and young people during the Holocaust though a dynamic combination of live theater and archival film footage. Ages 18+.

What does it mean to survive? Bear witness to the world of Anne Frank and other young people living through the Holocaust, from the point of view of Anne Frank's "best friend", Sarah. Sarah is a historically accurate composite character, based on the testimonies of those who knew Anne Frank, as well as other victims, resisters and survivors of the Holocaust and World War II. Like Anne Frank, Sarah is a young Jewish girl in Amsterdam when Hitler comes to power in the 1930s, whose experiences under Nazi rule, in hiding and through the concentration camps parallel Anne’s story.

This program will be offered in person and virtually, and it will be performed by historian and performer Elgin Kelley, who started working with Living Voices in 2008. She studied at Webster Conservatory of Theatre Arts and Drew University.

Registration is appreciated to attend in person, though walk-ins are welcome as space allows.

Join virtually here (with a valid email address and name).

This event is presented in partnership with JCC Chicago, Arlington Heights Memorial Aurora Public Library, Gail Borden Public Library, Joliet Public Library, Schaumburg Township District Library, Skokie Public Library, and Vernon Area Public Library. Presented as part of Violins of Hope: a collection of 70 string instruments played by Jewish musicians before and during the Holocaust that have been painstakingly restored, now touring Chicagoland libraries, museums, and cultural institutions with a message of hope, resistance, resilience, and unity.
